HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L.
Even everyday heroes like police officers need to know they are not alone when facing a cancer diagnosis.
RCMP Constable Christopher Jones, of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Detachment, has partnered with Women in Networking Kindness (WINK) to support sales of its Breastless and Beautiful calendars, with proceeds going to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre Patient and Family Support Fund.
Jones is a cancer survivor, recently receiving the good news that he is cancer free after battling bowel and liver cancer.
WINK, a volunteer group who offer emotional support to those suffering from cancer, launched the calendar fundraising campaign in 2018, using 13 local models who have all battled breast cancer. They are also featuring images involving first responders to show how even everyday heroes affected by cancer need emotional support. Jones was photographed with Susan Ralph, one of the calendar models.
“I was pleased to join with WINK for its everyday hero photo series,” said Jones. “This past year has been an extremely challenging one for me and my family.
“The support I received from my work colleagues in Happy Valley-Goose Bay was overwhelming – they raised money to ensure my driveway was cleared for the entire winter season and even decorated my house for Christmas. The support I received from the RCMP Health Services team was also outstanding.”
Ralph said, “I was honoured to be photographed with Chris, to be able to stand shoulder to shoulder, survivor next to survivor and let people know that no one is immune to cancer — not even police officers who are true heroes.
“Almost everyone in this province has been touched by cancer. Continuing to raise awareness is one of our most powerful tools in helping people to win their own battles.”
RCMP Occupational Health Services focuses on health promotion, protection from hazards, and prevention of illness and injury and is responsible for following regular members and civilian members when they are ill or injured and facilitating their return to the workplace.
RCMP NL also has a Peer to Peer coordinator who facilitates and promotes Health Canada’s Employee Assistance Program within the province and supports employees with emergency and critical situations. Together, these resources form a wellness team which provides medical and emotional support and assistance to employees of the RCMP in NL.
