BURIN, N.L. — Several businesses and organizations shut down for the day on Friday, Jan. 17 as an intense winter storm engulfed the Burin Peninsula

Closures started to be announced as early as Thursday evening with many business owners in the area posting to the Facebook page Burin Peninsula Winter Closures in advance of the snow. Businesses that opened on Friday shut down early as storm conditions worsened.

Walmart in Marytown annouced just before noon it would be closing for the remainder of the day. The store noted on its Facebook page any Red Cross or emergency service personnel in need of critical supplies could call a number listed on the post.

While some businesses are closed, others decided to stay open as long as possible.

In Grand Bank, Burfitt's Electro-Tech is open. Owner Barry Smith said if the store does close an update will be made in a message on social media. Warren's store also remains open.
