The dump site at Port aux Basques is no longer in operation.
On Friday, Sept. 21 the Port aux Basques town council received an email notification rescinding the extension of continued operation for its town dump. The extension had been granted only a couple of days before, but given the announcement on Thursday, Sept. 20 of an interim agreement between Western Newfoundland and Central, waste will now be shipped to Norris Arm for proper disposal.
Last week’s confusion surrounding the new Sort It–Western program resulted in a flood of calls to town offices by confused residents.
Port aux Basques Mayor John Spencer advised The Gulf News via email that for the time being curbside collection will continue as normal.
He said, “Lots of fine print to be worked over before the dust settles on this one for the entire west coast.”
An email from the Western Regional Waste Management board did confirm that the $164 per tonne tipping fee will apply to all users of the facility, including individual homeowners and businesses.
