ST. ANTHONY, N.L. — St. Anthony officially has a new mayor.
Krista Lynn Howell was selected by council as the mayor of St. Anthony during the Sept. 10 public meeting.
She becomes the first female mayor in the municipality’s 74-year history.
Howell assumes the role after Desmond McDonald stepped down from mayor in the middle of his first term on July 31.
She had served as acting mayor since Aug 1.
Council had multiple options at its disposal to select a new mayor, but opted to act internally and promote Howell from her position as deputy mayor.
Howell first joined council after winning a byelection in October 2015. She was selected as deputy mayor by council after the Oct 2017 municipal elections.
An election will be held on Oct .24 to fill the vacant position on council. The deadline for nominations is set for Oct. 3.
A new deputy mayor is still to be selected.
