STEPHENVILLE, N.L. — James Malcolm Stagg has been remanded into custody following his arrest for a series of violent crimes in Stephenville on Wednesday.

At 2 p.m. the Bay St. George RCMP received a report of a home invasion in an apartment on Oregon Drive.

Stagg, 40, had allegedly forced his way into the apartment, assaulted and threatened a man inside the home and robbed him of personal property at knifepoint. The man left the apartment to get help and during that time another person in the apartment was allegedly sexually assaulted.

Stagg fled the scene before police arrived. A search for Stagg continued throughout the night with assistance from police dog services west, but he was not located.

At 11 a.m. on Thursday, police located Stagg at a separate apartment complex on Oregon Drive.

He barricaded himself inside the home with a woman and refused to exit. While police attempted to negotiate with him, Stagg allegedly assaulted the woman. Officers forced entry into the apartment and intervened.

Stagg resisted arrest and entered into a physical altercation with the officers. He was tasered and taken into custody. During the investigation police learned another man, who was at the apartment before they arrived, had allegedly been threatened, assaulted and robbed by Stagg.

Stagg has been charged with break and enter, two counts of robbery, two counts of uttering threats, three counts of assault with a weapon, sexual assault with a weapon, unlawful confinement, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault causing bodily harm and two counts of breach of probation.

Stagg will appear in provincial court in Stephenville on Nov. 23.
