STEADY BROOK, N.L. — The much-anticipated day arrived for outdoor enthusiasts as Marble Mountain opened for the 2020 winter season Friday morning.
Skiers and snowboarders hit the hills on a particularly wintry day with flurries falling and wind chill temperatures around -19 C when it opened around 9 a.m.
But that was no means for concern. For many, it was invigorating just to get on the snow after a long wait.
“We got more snow so that’s the best part,” said snowboarder Tara Noseworthy.
Meanwhile, Janice Turner was thrilled to be able to strap on a snowboard again after an injury sidelined her for the past three years.
“This is my first run (in three years),” Turner told The Western Star before taking to the slopes. “I’m very excited.”
Marble Mountain’s opening date was originally scheduled for Jan. 2, but a lack of snow and poor snowmaking conditions delayed its opening.
Earlier this week, staff was finally able to fire up the snow guns and make some snow as the temperature dropped.
The region was also blanketed with some extra snow after a storm hit Wednesday through Thursday.
Ninety per cent of the slopes were open on Friday. Additional snow was still to be made over the next couple days before the remaining hills could open.
