MARYSTOWN, N.L. — The Burin Peninsular RCMP have laid public mischief charges against an 18-year-old Marystown woman after she falsely claimed to have been sexually assaulted.

On March 16, police say the woman alleged she was assaulted the night before by a 32-year-old man from the Burin Peninsula area.

The RMCP investigation resulted in evidence that the alleged assault did not occur and that the woman provided police with false information.

Police remind citizens that it is a criminal offence to report false information of a crime or information that intends to mislead police.
