Young people in Port Saunders will now have a place to call their own, after the municipality and RCMP detachment teamed up to get them a youth centre.
“It really came about jointly between the RCMP and the town council and mayor,” Sgt. Desmond Mollon said Nov. 30. “They already had this facility, what they had done was purchase the old school from the province, and now there’s all kinds of groups in there.”
With about $12,500 from the Family Violence Initiative Fund, and a whole pile of donations, rebates, and discounts from local groups and businesses, the Port Saunders Youth Centre officially opened its doors Nov. 19. A space for young people from 12 to 18 years old, it’s equipped with TVs, gaming consoles, ping pong, pool, and air hockey tables, a dart board, craft materials, board games, computer, furnishings and numerous other items, according to a release issued Nov. 30.
“We’re not done making it better,” Mollons said, noting that the space could still do with some gym equipment. “We really consulted with the youth to see what they wanted.”
The facility will also be a place where the RCMP and other organizations like Western Health can give presentations and connect with teenagers somewhere other than school.
