CLARENVILLE, N.L. — The RCMP is investigating a head-on collision on the TCH that claimed the life of an 18-year-old from St. John's on Wednesday.
Near 4 p.m., the Clarenville RCMP responded to the collision involving a small car and an SUV near Goobies.
Police say the driver of the car died at the scene while his passenger, described only as a 16-year-old, was seriously injured. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old female driver of the SUV was pinned inside and had to be extricated. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening.
A Collision Reconstructionist with RCMP Traffic Services attended the scene and the investigation, which is continuing at this time, has determined that speed was a factor in the collision.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been engaged.
RCMP thanks Fewer’s Ambulance Service, as well firefighters with Clarenville and Northern Bight volunteer fire departments, for their tremendous level of support and assistance at the scene.
