CORNER BROOK, N.L.
Tanner Thomas Healey has had his full parole revoked by the Parole Board of Canada.
The Deer Lake man was sentenced in provincial court in Corner Brook in April 2018 to four years, two months and seven days in jail for his part in an October 2017 home invasion in Reidville.
Healey, 25, was one of four people charged in the home invasion, which occurred while on a cocaine binge and the intent was to rob one of the people in the home. He was carrying a BB gun, however, it was perceived to be real by the people in the home.
While one of the other men searched for money, Healey held the victims at gunpoint. One of the victims recognized his voice and assisted the police in locating the intruders. He was subsequently found guilty of robbery with the use of a firearm, being disguised with intent, break and enter and theft. He was released to a community residential facility on day parole in April 2019 and transitioned to full parole in September 2019.
Healey returned to live in Deer Lake and on Feb. 15 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police received information alleging he was trafficking in cocaine. Police initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle Healey was travelling in and he fled. When apprehended, he claimed the cocaine police found was for personal use. He was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking. He has been under the jurisdiction of the Correctional Service of Canada since then.
The Correctional Service of Canada recommended his full parole be revoked by the parole board. After reviewing the case by way of an office file, the board rendered its decision doing so on April 20. Healey did not make any written representations to the board.
In a post-suspension interview on Feb. 20 Healey said he had been using cocaine for about one week before his arrest and recent news about his relationship and personal stress led him to return to drug use.
In a review of Healey’s social history, the board noted previous drug abuse and trafficking, that he had periods of abstinence from drugs, but would relapse and increase his use when dealing with stressors in his life.
While incarcerated, Healey did not meet the criteria to participate in correctional programming. The correctional service is now recommending an override for inclusion in such.
The board said his accountability, motivation, and reintegration potential have each been reduced from high to medium. However, he is still considered to be engaged in his correctional plan.
While his family is supportive, Healey’s previous release destination is no longer considered a viable place for him to live, given the negative associates in the area who continue to exercise undue influence.
In revoking his parole, the board said it no longer believes Healey can be managed in the community. Healey is due to appear in provincial court in Corner Brook on June 8 on the possession for the purpose of trafficking charge.
