RODDICKTON, N.L. — Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) will have a new president next month.
Sheila Fitzgerald, the mayor of Roddickton-Bide Arm on the Great Northern Peninsula, will officially assume the role on Nov 17.
With Tony Keats stepping down, Fitzgerald, the current vice president, was acclaimed as the next president on Oct 18.
“This is a great opportunity to work with the municipalities, to work with government, so that at the end of the end of the day, rural NL and urban centers all get the best possible services and to create better outcomes for everyone,” she told The Northern Pen.
She cited waste disposal, clean drinking water and waste water regulations as some of the common issues facing municipalities throughout the province.
She called it a “great honour” to become the new president of MNL.
Fitzgerald was born and raised in Labrador City.
She was first introduced to Roddickton-Bide Arm in 1992 and later became a permanent resident of the town.
She became the town’s mayor in 2013, a role she has assumed ever since.
Two years later, Fitzgerald joined the MNL Board of Directors and assumed the role of Small Towns Director.
Since 2017, she has held the role of board vice president.
