MARYSTOWN, N.L. — A healthy dumping of snow early this morning that has since turned to rain is creating a mess on the Burin Peninsula today, Wednesday, Feb. 19.

Heavy slush and strong winds made for treacherous driving conditions on the highway between Grand Bank and Marystown late morning.

Environment Canada still has wind and rainfall warnings in effect for the region.

According to the weather agency’s forecast, rain mixed with snow will end this evening, becoming mainly cloudy with a 40 per cent chance of flurries before morning. Southwest wind will turn west with gusts up to 70 km/h near midnight.

The weather caused the Burin Peninsula Regional Service Board to delay and then postpone waste pickup scheduled for today until tomorrow.

The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) has closed all schools on the Burin Peninsula for the day.

There was also a report of a transport truck stuck on the Burin Peninsula Highway near Terrenceville around mid-day.
