STEPHENVILLE, N.L. - One man has been charged and five others could face charges following an incident at a residence in St. George’s on July 31.

The Bay St. George RCMP was conducting an impaired driving investigation when the incident occurred.

According to a news release from the RCMP, officers had attempted a traffic stop of a vehicle on White House Road just after 3 a.m. However, the vehicle turned into a driveway on the street.

The officers suspected the driver to be impaired by alcohol and were in the midst of their investigation when officers say 29-year-old Trevor Russell came out of the residence. Russell, who is from St. George’s, allegedly approached the officers in a threatening and aggressive manner, and interfered with the investigation.

Five other males joined him, allegedly acting in a similar manner and also interfered with the investigation.

Russell was arrested later in the day and charged with obstruction of justice and intimidation of a police officer. He appeared in court via telephone and was remanded into custody for a bail hearing. He’s since been released on a number of conditions.

Police say the investigation is continuing and charges of obstruction of justice are being pursued against the other men involved.

Russell is scheduled to appear in provincial court on Aug. 24 in Stephenville to face the charges.
