STORY MAP: Tracking the killer's and RCMP's movements during Nova Scotia mass shooting

Twenty-two innocent people lost their lives during a gunman's rampage that started in the small community of Portapique on April 18 and ended at a gas station in Enfield on April 19. 

As the RCMP's investigation continues, many are still left with questions about the horrific events that took place over a 13-hour period. 

The Chronicle Herald has pieced together a timeline based on interviews and information provided by the Nova Scotia RCMP. 



April 18

Before 10 p.m. — The gunman assaults a woman he is in a relationship with at a residence in the Portapique area. She escapes and hides in the woods. 

10:01 p.m. — Nova Scotia RCMP say the first 911 call of gunshots in the Portapique area comes in. 

Corrie Ellison and his brother, Clinton, are visiting their father in Portapique when they hear gunshots. Corrie goes to take a look, sees a fire and goes to take photos. Clinton later goes to find Corrie and finds him dead on the road. After spotting a flashlight in the distance, Clinton runs and hides in the woods for four hours. 

10:26 p.m. — RCMP officers arrive on scene in the Portapique area and find several casualties, inside and outside, and structure fires. 

Officers find a man with gunshot wounds walking along Portapique Beach Road. He tells police he was shot by someone driving what looked to be a police vehicle, which then headed toward the beach. 

10:35 p.m. — A witness sees a vehicle leaving through a field, which is believed to have been the gunman.

11:12 p.m. —The gunman heads to Debert. He stops and stays in the industrial area for more than six hours. 

11:32 p.m. — On Twitter, Nova Scotia RCMP say they are responding to a firearms complaint and advise residents in the Portapique area to stay home and lock their doors. 

Overnight — Police find 13 people dead and several structure fires within a two-square-mile area around Portapique, particularly along Portapique Beach Road and Orchard Beach Drive.

Twelve of the victims: Jamie and Greg Blair, Lisa McCully, Dawn Madsen, Frank Gulenchyn, Jolene Oliver, Aaron and Emily Tuck, Peter and Joy Bond, Elizabeth Joanne Thomas and John Zahl lived in the area. 

Police secure and evacuate the area, while looking for possible suspects. 


April 19

5:32 a.m. — The gunman leaves Debert and travels north along Highway 4 toward Wentworth.

6:29 a.m. — The gunman drives down Hunter Road in Wentworth to the residence of Alanna Jenkins and Sean McLeod, who were known to him. 

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. — The gunman sets the residence on fire and kills Alanna Jenkins, Sean McLeod. Tom Bagley, the couple's neighbour, was out for his morning walk, saw the fire and went over to help. He was killed by the gunman. 

Meanwhile in Portapique, the gunman's girlfriend comes out of hiding and tells police the shooter has a police uniform, mock police cruiser and multiple firearms.

8:02 a.m. — On Twitter, Nova Scotia RCMP say the Portapique situation involves an active shooter. The gunman is actually in Wentworth.

8:54 a.m. — RCMP release a photo of the shooter they're searching for on Twitter. RCMP also tweet there are "multiple victims."

9:23 a.m. — The gunman leaves Hunter Road and begins to head out of Wentworth.

9:43 a.m. — The gunman kills Lillian Campbell Hyslop, as she's walking along the highway near the Wentworth Province Park, before continuing southbound on Highway 4.

9:48 a.m. — RCMP receive a 911 call from a man, who says the gunman stopped at his house in Wentworth and knocked on the door, but didn't come in.

9:57 a.m. — The gunman drives east on Plains Road in Debert. 

10:04 a.m. — On Twitter, RCMP warn people to avoid Highway 4 near Hidden Hilltop Campground in Glenholme, as the shooter is in the area. The gunman is actually in Debert.

10:08 a.m. — The gunman pulls over a vehicle and shoots the driver and shoots another driver passing by. The victims are Kristen Beaton and Heather O'Brien.

10:16-10:19 a.m. — The gunman drives on Walker, Esplanade and Willow streets in Truro, but doesn't stop.

10:21 a.m. — On Twitter, RCMP warn people that the shooter is in the Central Onslow and Debert area in a mock police cruiser and RCMP uniform. The gunman is actually in the Truro area.

10:25 a.m. — The gunman stops outside a business in Millbrook on Highway 2 and changes part of his outfit, removing a jacket and putting on a vest.

10:28 a.m. — The gunman drives south on Highway 2 toward Brookfield.

10:30 a.m. — Shots are fired outside of the Onslow Belmont Fire Brigade by two RCMP officers, but the gunman isn't in the area at the time. The incident is now under investigation by SIRT.

10:32 a.m. — The gunman drives by a gas station and Tim Hortons on the corner of Highway 2 and Pleasant Valley Road in Brookfield, heading toward Shubenacadie.

After 10:35 a.m. — Const. Chad Morrison and Const. Heidi Stevenson arrange to meet at the intersection of Highway 2 and Highway 224, near the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park. 

A marked police car approaches Morrison, but it's actually the gunman, who pulled up beside the officer and opened fire, hitting Morrison several times. Morrison alerted other officers while retreating to seek emergency medical attention.

10:48 a.m. — Stevenson continues on Highway 2 and confronts the gunman. The 23-year RCMP veteran engages the gunman and is killed.

Joey Webber, a resident of Shubenacadie, is driving by the scene and stops to help, but is killed by the gunman. The gunman takes Stevenson's sidearm and ammunition and Webber's SUV.

11:04 a.m. — On Twitter, RCMP say the gunman was last seen travelling southbound on Highway 102 from Brookfield. The gunman is actually in Shubenacadie.

11:06 a.m. — On Twitter, RCMP say the gunman is now believed to be driving a small silver Chevrolet SUV southbound on Highway 102 from Brookfield area. The gunman is actually in Shubenacadie.

Between 11:06 a.m. to 11:23 am. —The gunman goes to Gina Goulet's home in Shubenacadie and kills her. 

The gunman changes out of the police uniform and discards them outside of Goulet's home, before stealing Goulet's Mazda 3 and heading toward Enfield on Highway 102.

11:23 a.m. — The gunman takes Exit 7 off Highway 102.

11:24 a.m. —  On Twitter, RCMP say the gunman is driving a silver Chevy Tracker and was last seen in Milford. The gunman is actually driving a Mazda 3 in Enfield.

11:26 a.m. — The gunman is shot and killed by RCMP at a gas station in Enfield. 

11:40 a.m. — On Twitter, RCMP say they have the gunman in custody.

Ongoing investigation — As of April 28, RCMP had identified more than 435 potential witnesses and of the 16 crime scenes, five scenes were still being held in Portapique and Hunter Road in Wentworth.
