The Botanical Art Society of Newfoundland and Labrador will hold its annual general meeting and election of officers at the Memorial University Botanical Garden conference room on Mount Scio Road. The AGM and election of officers will take place from 9:30-10:10 a.m. Members are encouraged to attend and vote for the new executive. Following the election, Paul Marino, a plant ecologist in MUN’s department of biology, will provide a short presentation on his plant research. After a coffee break, Margaret Walsh Best will provide a short 15-minute mini-workshop on “The Why and How of Artist Biographies.” Artists are then welcome to stay until 4 p.m. for studio time. Bring your art materials and feel free to stay for all or any part of the day.

A DNA Mystery
There has been a number of recent media reports about a “mystery line of DNA” that is found in roughly 10 per cent of Newfoundlanders. In this free lecture at the Johnson Geo Centre, David Pike, professor of mathematics at Memorial University, will discuss mitochondrial DNA (which is a valuable genealogical tool for researching matrilineal ancestry) with emphasis on mitochondrial haplogroup H5a5, its significance in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the mystery of its origin.
‘The Boor’ and ‘The Door’
Broken Earth Productions is presenting two one-act comedies, Anton Chekhov’s “The Boor” and Mac Reilley’s “The Door,” May 27-31 at 8 p.m. nightly at the D.F. Cook Recital Hall to raise funds for our very own Team Broken Earth, Newfoundland’s International medical charity.
