Town of Come By Chance declares state of emergency due to storm

COME BY CHANCE, N.L. — The Town of Come By Chance has advised residents via a Facebook post that a state of emergency has been declared.

“For safety concerns, we have ceased snowclearing operations and our equipment has been taken off the road,” posted about 2:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
The town is asking residents to stay in the safety of their homes. They also advise anyone, in the event of an emergency, to call 911 or the fire department.

“Please feel free to share this information with anyone in the community who may have limited access to this message.”

Other towns address storm

Meanwhile, nearby Town of Arnold’s Cove has been monitoring the storm and advised their residents this morning, in the event of an extended power outage, the local recreation centre will be open for all residents to serve as a warming centre. For the time being, maintenance crews continue to plow side roads, and they ask for vehicles not to be parked on the streets.

They will announce on their Facebook page when the centre is opened—only in the event of a power outage.

They also listed the following emergency numbers on their Facebook page for reference:

• RCMP/Ambulance: 911
• NL Power Outage Line: 1-800-474-5711

In Bonavista, the Town released a statement on their Facebook page which says they have an emergency preparedness plan in place.

The message posted to Facebook at 2 p.m. reads, “We have been receiving numerous inquiries regarding the Town’s emergency preparedness during this storm. We would like to assure the public that the Town of Bonavista does have an extensive emergency preparedness plan in place.

“Should the need arise to activate this plan, we are prepared.”

They also advised residents to monitor the page for any updates on the storm.
