LABRADOR CITY, N.L. — The Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation says it hopes to have an old Labrador City playground removed within the next two weeks.
The playground, located on Cavendish Crescent, has been called a danger by many residents due to its dilapidated condition.
“NLHC has been working with a representative of the municipality’s Recreational Division to obtain assistance and approval to have the remaining structures removed from the site in question. We hope to have this work completed within the next couple of weeks,” reads a statement from an NLHC spokesperson.
“… NLHC’s priority is the safety of the children; therefore, in areas where agreements with municipalities were not possible, NLHC has removed any remaining structures.”
In May, a large online discussion about the state of the playground was sparked when Labrador City resident Ashley Penny posted pictures of the equipment.
“Oh, it’s absolutely decrepit; I wouldn’t let anybody play on that playground,” Penny told The Labrador Voice. “As you can see by the pictures, there’s no swings, the slide is lopsided, the platforms are tilting and they appear to be falling; dry rot and glass, the fences are falling down.”
Labrador City Mayor Fabian Benoit said the town also wants to see it removed, and has been working with NLHC to get it taken down soon.
“We are collaborating with NL Housing to have it removed in consideration of safety,” said Benoit to The Labrador Voice. “There are a few factors and options to be determined and collectively agreed upon prior to implementation of removal. Although this playground is owned by NL Housing, we are committed to assist in getting the issue resolved.”
