RCMP investigation underway after threat found in Port aux Basques high school

On Wednesday, April 25 administrators at St. James Regional High released a statement notifying the school community a note containing a threat toward the school had been found in a classroom. The statement, which was subsequently shared on social media, alluded to a possible emergency that would take place on Friday, April 27.

The community was advised that RCMP have launched an investigation, have already spoken with some students and will remain present at the school during the course of the investigation.

Cheryl Gullage, manager of communications for the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) has confirmed via email that an RCMP investigation into a possible threat is underway.

The NLESD has issued the following statement:

“The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District is cooperating with the RCMP after a note containing a threat was found within St. James Regional High School. While the note discussed a potential threat against the school for Friday, police are conducting an investigation and advising the school as their probe continues. The parent community has been informed and will be provided updates as necessary.

“The safety and security of our students is of the utmost importance to us and we take advice from policing officials in these situations. The District takes these matters very seriously and appreciates the cooperation of the school community. As this is an ongoing investigation, the District cannot comment further at this time.”

The RCMP have also issued a statement.

"On April 25, 2018, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Port aux Basques RCMP received a report of a threat at St. James Regional High School. No students or staff were injured as a result of this incident. The nature of the threat is not being disclosed at this time. The investigation is continuing."
