CLARENVILLE, N.L. — Kevin Fitzpatrick of Elliott’s Cove says he visits the small parking lot, known locally as the Naked Man Lookout, just East of Clarenville on the Trans Canada Highway several times a week — drinking coffee, talking to others who stop, and enjoying the view.

However, on Wednesday afternoon, June 6, he was disgusted by what he saw on the small parking lot.

Kevin and his wife Carol told The Packet there were hundreds of what appear to be small bait fish dumped in the middle of the lot.

They say it didn’t look accidental, but even if it had, they think whoever was responsible for the spill should have enough sense to clean up after themselves.

Kevin says when he first saw it in the early afternoon the little fish were still alive — piled up and still jumping around. By about 4 p.m. they were all mostly dead.

He sees many people from out of province were at the lookout, and says four people from Nova Scotia stopped to take photos of the mystery pile of tiny fish with more joining in.

The Fitzpatricks likened the act to the problem of dumping garbage and littering in the area.

“It’s ridiculous,” says Kevin.

They pointed out the hundreds of coffee cups and other debris on the side of the TCH outside the community.

“It’s embarrassing meeting people from other places and all you can see is garbage,” he says.

The Packet contacted the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources and will provide an update when more information is available.
