It was a strong played weekend of soccer as the St. Lawrence Blues Girls Indoor soccer team competed for the provincial title this past weekend.
The tournament hosted by St. Lawrence Academy ran Dec 7-9, and saw the host team win the title.
“We went undefeated, three games in the round robin,” explained coach Lorna Pittman. “We defeated Mobile 7-2 in the semi-final and then we met our rivals Mealy Mountain Collegiate in the final.”
Pittman added the team had advanced to the championships last year, losing to Mealy Mountain in the final.
She added that going into the final game the girls were confident, but nervous to be taking on the defending champions.
“The girls knew that this particular team were lightening quick,” said Pittman. “They knew what to expect. Our girls did a great job holding them off and managed to get a goal in the first 10 minutes to spark a fire under them.”
The Blues led for the better part of the championship match, when a lone goal by Mealy Mountain in the final minutes forced the game into overtime.
Madison Burke from SLA scored about a minute into overtime to clinch the win for The Blues.
“It was an unbelievable feeling when Madison scored that game-winning goal. It was the type of game where it could have went either way.”
