WABUSH, N.L.
The Town of Wabush has issued an advisory to residents related to the high number of foxes spotted throughout the community.
Town manager Charlie Perry says while the animals are beautiful, they are still wild, and for that reason they should not be approached or fed.
Often the foxes come into town looking for food in and around people garbage bins or containers near restaurants or service clubs and the like where food is being prepared.
Feeding foxes also can encourage them to return to what they consider a source of food.
“These fox have been seen throughout the community,” Perry told The Aurora. “Guy Street, which is on the edge of town, but also Carson and Dunfield near the centre of town.”
The town has been in contact with wildlife officials, and at the time there is no indication of rabies in the fox population. Several years ago there were reports of rabid foxes in the area, but that is not the case at this time.
People who may be concerned about pets could keep an eye on them, but Perry says there is no indication a normal healthy fox would attack a pet, and there have been no reports of that happening. Several years ago small pets went missing in Wabush, but that was attributed to wolves. It seems the foxes are just interested in finding a meal in people’s garbage.
Meanwhile Perry is asking people who see a fox(es) to report it to wildlife at 282-6881, along with the animal’s location.
Meanwhile he repeats his request, not to approach foxes and especially not to feed them.
