Good deeds always deserve to get good ink.
That is an old saying for people getting their stories published in the newspapers of the world.
For the past seven years, Trouble Bound Studio (TBS) in St. John’s has been getting — and giving — good ink as it hosts fundraisers to benefit those who are suffering through the many trials and tribulations associated with cancer.
TBS will holding its 8th annual Cancer Ribbon fundraiser today with proceeds going to Daffodil Place (www.cancer.ca/nl).
The artists at the TBS studeio will dedicate the entire daym including extended shop hoursm to tattooing cancer ribbons for $100 plus tax each.
Munro, owner and operator of TBS will also donate income from the day of the event generated from the sales of T-shirts and art prints.
“Over the last few years TBS staff have lost a number of close family members, friends, and clients to cancer,’’ Dave Munro, the studeio’s owner/operator said.
“Spurred forward by the loss, TBS staff made the decision to try and reach out to those fighting for their lives," he added noting that in the last seven years TBS has raised more than $54,500 for Daffodil place.
Munro lost his brother to brain cancer in 2010 and he and his family had planned a trip to get away and be away during his brother’s birthday.
Then life got in the way again, a few things went awry like a broken furnace in his home, and the trip didn’t happen.
So he decided he would do two things, the first was to go to work and stay busy in order to ease his mind a bit and secondly, to host an event that he could raise money to benefit those living with cancer issues.
“I approached everyone at the shop and it became abundantly clear very quickly they all had lost a family member through cancer,’’ he said.
“I then reached out to Daffodil Place to make sure it was OK to do it and away we went,’’ he added.

Munro said he anticipated doing 10-15 tattoos that day and before he and the staff finished there were about 40 done — each person with their own individual reason and a story as to why they wanted a tattoo.
He said it was such a positive day for him and for everyone in the shop as those people shared their stories.
“Many of these people are getting their first tattoo,’’ he said.
“I was feeling bad about my brother when the first woman through the door had just lost her two-year-old to leukemia. That put things in perspective right out of the gate,’’ he added.
Munro said he looks forward to doing this event each year and he will continue to do so because to him the cause is significant.
The number of people who require aid while going through treatment is huge,’’ Munro said.
“This is doing what it is supposed to do, helping people who need help and not making drug companies lots of money. Hopefully we can get these people a good meal and a hug at the end of the day.”
