There are two new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Eastern Health region of Newfoundland and Labrador, a news release from the Department of Health and Community services sent on Saturday, Nov. 28, said.

The first case is a female between 60 and 69 years of age who is a resident of the province and a member of the same household as a previous case. The case is connected to the recent cluster in Grand Bank, but they are not a tenant of Blue Crest Cottages.

The second new confirmed case is travel related and is a male between the ages of 50 and 59. They are a resident who recently returned from the United States.

Both individuals are self-isolating and contact tracing is currently ongoing.

Anyone who was a passenger on Air Canada Flight 7480 from Montreal to St. John’s on Wednesday, Nov. 25, is asked to call 811 to arrange for testing. They should monitor for symptoms for 14 days from the time of arrival even if they receive a negative result, the news release said.

On Friday, Nov 27, the Department of Health and Community Services announced there were three new confirmed cases of COVID-19 where the source of infection was being investigated. On Saturday, Nov. 28, they announced the investigation was finished and all three cases were travel related.

One case came to the province from Europe, the second case came from Asia and the third case is a close contact of a traveler who returned from work in British Columbia.

The first two cases are in the Eastern Health region but are not connected. The third case is in the Western Health region but is not associated with the cluster in Deer Lake.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has notified the Department of Health and Community Services in Newfoundland and Labrador of three outbreaks in Alberta.

“There are outbreaks at the Cenovus Energy Foster Creek oil sands project, the Cenovus Energy Christina Lake oil sands project and the Syncrude Canada Aurora mine site,” the news release said. “Rotational workers with these projects who have returned to Newfoundland and Labrador in the last 14 days must self-isolate and physically distance away from household members and call 811 to arrange COVID-19 testing. These workers must now complete the full 14-day self-isolation period, regardless of test result.”

Rules for rotational workers that went into effect on Wednesday, Nov. 25, do not apply to workers who work on sites with ongoing outbreaks.

There are currently 32 active cases of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A recovery in the Western Health region means 297 people have recovered.

No one is currently in hospital due to COVID-19.

The number of people who have been tested is 61,832.
