Cannabis Care, an unlicensed dispensary on Water Street in St. John’s, was shut down Thursday evening, just one day after recreational marijuana became legal across the country.

The outlet advertised high-quality strains of medical cannabis, edibles and extracts. “CLOSED!” was scribbled on a piece of white paper and stuck to the door with tape that had “EVIDENCE” written along it in red.

A Newfoundland Liquor Corp. vehicle was parked nearby.

The Telegram called the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) to ask whether police were involved in closing the shop’s doors, but RNC Sgt. Neil Duggan said to his knowledge they did not have patrol officers at Cannabis Care.

As of 7 p.m. Thursday, customers were coming by to try the door, which was locked. An hours of operation sign showed it’s typically open until 10 p.m.

A woman who stopped to try the door said she smokes “dabs and shatter,” which she said Tweed doesn’t sell, so she gets it at Cannabis Care. She was disappointed to see it was closed.
