VICTORIA, NL — A provincial government waterbomber was called in to assist with the battle against a forest fire on the edge of Victoria’s municipal boundary.

The fire reportedly started late Thursday afternoon, May 10. Members of the local fire department worked with provincial officials to control the blaze, which appeared to be in an area near Snooks Hill toward the north end of Victoria.

According to a provincial forest fire duty officer who spoke with The Compass, the situation started with a bog and scrub fire. The waterbomber made 18 drops in total and as of 6:30 p.m., the fire was deemed to be under control. There was no information on the size of the fire.

Harbour Grace RCMP were stationed on Route 74 to control traffic. Officers allowed vehicles to drive through the area once the waterbomber passes over the highway.
