Environment Canada issued a special weather statement early Saturday morning for the Avalon Peninsula, southeast and southwest.
“Dense fog will develop in unseasonably warm southeasterly winds” are expected throughout the day today and will spread inland tonight, Environment Canada warns.
“The fog will ease throughout the day on Sunday as the winds shift to south-westerlies.”
Visibility will be reduced to near zero in places and travelling will be hazardous during this time.
Other parts of the island are advised to expect rain and freezing rain.
Enivronment Canada says this system over southwestern Newfoundland will slowly make its way north and eastward this morning.
Freezing rain, especially inland and over higher terrain, is also expected to end this morning where temperatures will take longer to rise above freezing.
The rain will become heavy at times late in the day today and persist tonight, and then ease by Sunday morning. In addition to the heavy rain, significant snow melt is also expected with the mild temperatures and strong winds.
Environment Canada predicts total rainfall amounts between 40 and 60 mm along the south coast and total amounts between 15 and 35 mm for the west coast and Great Northern Peninsula.
Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
High winds and heavy rain and freezing rain are expected in western Newfoundland, while flash freezing and freezing rain will affect much of Labrador.
Marine Atlantic has also issued an advisory that ferry schedules may be affected by adverse weather. High winds and waves are expected.
