Barbara Hopkins (Torraville) It is with great sadness, but with gratitude for a long and rewarding life lasting almost 99 years, that we announce the death, on Good Friday, of our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Barbara (Torraville) Hopkins. Barbara was born in Victoria Cove, NL to the late William John Torraville and Rachel Susanna (Dawe) Torraville and ultimately became the final survivor of her immediate family having been predeceased by sisters Kathleen Saunders, Hope Gillingham, Margaret Bursey, youthful sisters Evelyn and Joan and by brother, Ross Torraville. In 1998, after more than 55 years of marriage, she said goodbye to the light of her life, her loving husband, Marcus. Surviving her with thankful hearts are daughter, Ruth Pullin (Bill, deceased) and sons John (Sylvia), Tom (Dianne), Dennis (Carmel) and Gary (Esther) as well as grandchildren Craig Hopkins and Deborah Manning, Jonathan and Jeffrey Hopkins, Andrew and Elizabeth Pullin, Alison Lee and eleven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is sister-in-law Helen Torraville of Gander. She will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends scattered near and far. Our mother was a woman of many talents. When her mother died prematurely at age 40, her obligation turned to helping her sisters, Kathleen and Hope, to raise the remaining young siblings. Although she sacrificed her schooling, she became a wonderful homemaker, a skilled knitter, a voracious reader, an accomplished card and Scrabble player and an admiring fan of the Royal Family, especially the Queen. Quietly, she held a deep Christian faith and over the years volunteered many hours to her church and associated fraternities. Resting at Barrett’s, Hamilton Avenue on Tuesday, April 24th with visitation from 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm. A memorial service will be held from Barrett’s Chapel at 2 pm on Wednesday, April 25th. Cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred in the family plot in Heart’s Content at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined however memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staff of Admiral’s Coast Retirement Centre, St. Luke’s Homes and the Health Sciences Centre for their caring support and thoughtful attention.
