Capt. William Edward Bennett

Passed peacefully away at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Centre, surrounded by his loving family, Captain William Edward Bennett of Lance Cove, Bell Island, December 4th, 2018, age 75. Predeceased by his parents: Edward and Emily Bennett and his son William Patrick (Billy). Leaving to mourn, his wife Bridget Irene, daughters Mary Melita Elizabeth Bennett, Jackie Nugent (Chad), sister Joyce Ford (Bill 'Fordie'), brothers Alexander 'Sandy' Bennett (Doris) and Ronald Bennett (Carol). Mother in law Madeline Hamilton Janes and grandchildren Hunter and Jacob. Bill will be forever remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Skipper Bill worked for years as mate on the Great Lakes, was a long-time ferry captain on the Bell Island, Portugal Cove run, later on shipping along the Labrador coast, Hudson Bay, Greenland and beyond. He then travelled the province and to Nunavut teaching navigation for the marine institute division of Memorial University. Special thanks to the doctors and staff at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John's and the Bell Island Health Care Centre for their professional care and compassion. Also to the public health caregivers and ambulance attendants who attended to his needs while at home. Special thanks to Bridget Skehans and Bill's livelong friend George Normore. Cremation has taken place and his funeral service will be held at the Anglican church of St. Cyprian and St. Mary, Bell Island, on Saturday Dec. 8th, 2018 at 2:00pm with a reception to follow immediately in the church hall. Inurnment will take place at a later time.
