Professor of Computer Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland – St. John’s Campus December 1948 – Late December 2018 Passed away at home in St. John’s. Predeceased by his parents Shanti Sengupta and Amiyendu Deb of Calcutta, India, and sister Swapna De. Survived by his sister Rina Ghosh, niece Pritha Ghosh, nephew Amrit De, as well as a large circle of dear friends in St. John’s and dear friends and family in Calcutta. Dr. Deb received his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Calcutta, his Doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Iowa, and became a member of the Computer Science and Mathematics Faculty at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1976. As a long-time contributor, teacher and researcher, he was one of the founding faculty members to establish the Computer Science Department at Memorial University. An avid photographer, Indian classical vocalist, jazz ballet dancer, woodwork artisan, voracious reader, gardener, and eternal seeker. He was also a great conversationalist with an infectious laugh. Ashoke was a multi-talented individual who enjoyed all aspects of life. Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Saturday, January 19 from 9 am - 3 pm with a funeral service immediately following in the Chapel at 3 pm.
