BENSON Gloria St. John's It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gloria Benson, age 76, at her residence on June 14, 2019. She leaves many friends and relatives to mourn her passing and remember her life. Gloria wanted to specifically mention her longtime friends: Daphne and Steery Freeman, Dr. Sunmolu Beckley, Jane Brown, Dr. P.G. Kwa, Fran Walsh, RN, Sylvia Carew, RN, and their families. She also leaves behind many relatives who loved her dearly, including Mike Warren, Elizabeth Noseworthy, Debbie Halliday, Bob Finn, and their families. Gloria was kind, compassionate and empathetic. Those traits led her to a long career as a Registered Nurse – General Hospital Class of 1965. Her profession took her to several areas of Newfoundland, including St. Anthony, Grand Falls, Carbonear, and St. John’s. She made many cherished and lifelong friendships along the way. Gloria liked to say, “You have to be a friend to make a friend.” Gloria made lots of friends. Gloria expressed her love for family and friends with her baking. If you received a cake or cookies at Christmas, you felt loved and blessed. She was also fiercely independent. She didn’t take lightly to nonsense, unfairness, unnecessary waiting times, and too much bureaucracy; and she made it known. Heartfelt thanks to the professionals at Eastern Health who treated her with kindness and compassion over the last few months of her life. While there are too many to mention individually, you know who you are. Her family and friends appreciate all you have done to make her final days peaceful and pain free. Thanks as well to her friends and neighbours in her apartment building. Your kindness and companionship will always be remembered. Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. Funeral service to be held from Barrett’s Memorial Chapel on Friday June 21st at 11am. Inurnment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, as a lover of animals, Gloria asked that a donation be made to the SPCA. Your journey is done. Rest in Peace, Gloria. You have earned it.
