Hilda Power
POWER Hilda It is with great sadness that the family of Hilda Power announces her passing. Hilda Power was a woman of pure love, of fierce independence, and one of the sweetest people you would ever meet. She fought a hard and difficult battle with cancer over the previous two years, however always managed to smile and thank everyone who helped her along the way. During the worst time of her life, she was a constant beam of light. Hilda was one of ten O’Driscoll children from the north side of Bay Bulls. While she grew up in the post-depression era of limited means, the stories she often told of her childhood were idyllic. Coming of age in the early nineteen sixties, she looked like a movie star in the polaroids her sister Margeurite took, going to dances with beehive hairdos and stylish dresses. She met her soulmate Pat Power, a ‘Tors Cove man’, at one of those dances during the summer of 1964, and in 1965 got married and had the first of her four sons. Initially they lived at Tors Cove, but Hilda quickly turned Pat into a ‘Bay Bulls man’. They moved away briefly to Toronto for a couple of years in 1968, but wanting her boys to grow up in Bay Bulls, they loaded Pat’s car up with everything they owned and drove east for the start of the 1970 school year. Together they raised four boys at Bay Bulls, each of whom inherited the loyal, loving and caring ways of their parents. Pat and Hilda were a loving and devoted couple, and were each other’s best friend. She missed him terribly since he died in 2011, and was truly lost without him. She and Pat loved each other and their boys unconditionally. They had a wonderful life together, which was enriched with the arrival of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom have a bit of Pat and Hilda in their character. Hilda will especially be remembered for her kindness and soft-heartedness, evident by the love she showed for her pets Bella and Lacey. Hilda’s loss is unbearable for those who loved her, and she will be truly missed. Hilda was predeceased by her parents Matthew and Sheila, her husband Pat, and by her sister Marguerite and brother John. Hilda will be lovingly remembered by her sons Glen (Florence), Ronnie (Paula), David (Michele), and Roy (Christine); grandchildren: Ronnie (Nathalie), Sean (Patricia), Daniel (Erica), Alison (Justin), Luke (Hannah), and their mother Tammy, Sarah (Adam), Stephen, Caelen, and Ryan; great grandchildren: Leslie and Broghan. siblings: Barb (Leo), Rosemary, Gary (Anita), Albert (Theresa), Pam (Keith), Kenny, and Rod (Cheryl); brother and sister in laws Anne (Gerry), Richard (Flora), as well as many nieces and nephews. Visitation will place at Ryan’s Funeral Home, Bay Bulls on Friday November 15th from 2 – 9 pm. Mass of Christian burial to take place at Sts. Peter and Paul RC Church, Bay Bulls on Saturday November 16th at 10am. Inurnment to follow at Sacred Heart RC Cemetery, Tors Cove. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation. The team at the centre treated Hilda extremely well during her illness.
