John Thomas Walsh

John Thomas Walsh
WALSH John Thomas It is with overwhelming sadness we announce the passing of our wonderful father John Thomas Walsh on October 18, 2019 in his 86th year. Predeceased by his loving wife Roberta (Chafe) Walsh, much loved sister Barbara Dalton, his parents John and Mary (Maddigan) Walsh, extended family, Iris King and best friends and in-laws Brian and Barbara Chafe. Left with a lifetime of cherished memories are his children Jane, Susan and David, his granddaughter who was his pride and joy, Gabrielle Brunie and his long-time loving partner June Schultz, and her family Steven Schultz and Beth (Richard) Howley. Also left to mourn are his siblings Gerard (Bernice) Walsh and Edward Walsh, brother in-law William (Winnifred) Chafe along with a large group of nieces and nephews. Following his father’s footsteps, John spent 45 years as an executive with the A. Harvey Group of Companies, retiring as Senior Vice President. John was a long-time member of the NL business community and was a player in the offshore oil industry, back when it was a hope and a prayer, earning the respect of his colleagues and competitors. John was instrumental in the development of the container shipping industry in the Port of St. John’s and served on many boards including Oceanex, St. Clare’s Hospital, and St. John’s Board of Trade, he mentored many young executives and took pride in their success. John was the quintessential gentleman with a quiet nature and a generous heart; he had a passion for global affairs, which he has passed on to his globetrotting granddaughter, with whom he enjoyed regular discussions of current events and kept involved in her business studies in Shanghai, China. John’s knowledge of political history and business affairs astounded all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him. Honouring his wishes, cremation has taken place. His family would like to thank nurse April Adams of the Palliative Care Mobile team, Compassion Home Care, especially Judy Patey, whose care and kindness permitted our father to remain comfortable at home until his last days, and Dr. Bryan Curtis, his nephrologist, for his care, friendship and unlimited access. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, Freshwater Road on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A private ceremony will take place at a later date.
