Judith Mary "Judy" Maclellan — Halifax

Judith Mary "Judy" Maclellan
Adored by her family and friends, Judy passed away peacefully May 28, 2019 in Hospice Halifax with her husband and children at her side. Born on January 14, 1945, Judy was the daughter of Dr. J.H. Charman and Audrey (Holdsworth) Charman. Judy was educated at Halifax city schools before graduating from Acadia University (BA) and Dalhousie University (BEd). She was a highly respected elementary teacher, before taking leave of her professional career to raise her three children. Judy would eventually return to teaching as a long-term substitute, as well as volunteering time with UNICEF, the IWK and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Open, kind and always curious, Judy will forever be known for her graciousness towards others, and her absolute devotion to her family. She was a natural caregiver whose loyalty and compassion were best exemplified through her attentiveness and care for her mother, and always demonstrated in the strong relationships she deeply nurtured with her husband, sons, daughter and grandchildren. She was intrinsically creative, a trait that was best exemplified through her beautiful gardens that wrapped around her beloved summer home in Smiths Cove. While she loved travel and discovering the joy found in new places, it was in Smiths Cove where she felt most alive; tending to her rose bushes, taking walks around "the loop" with her dogs Duffy, Hennessy and Remy, joining her friends at the Smiths Cove Rug Hookers or preparing delicious (and elegantly presented) meals for her family when they arrived to visit. Judy is survived by her husband, Peter MacLellan, Halifax; son, Scott MacLellan and his wife, Ryoko (Mitsuyasu) and their children, Lachlan and Spencer, New York; son, Jamie MacLellan and his wife, Claudia Chender MacLellan and their children, Ana, Molly and Sam, Dartmouth; her daughter, Allison Garber and her husband, Jeff Garber and their children, Hugh and Vera, Bedford; her brother, David Charman and his wife, Doreen, Halifax; along with her many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Her family wishes to thank the exceptional health care professionals at the VG Site, QEII, Palliative Care Unit and Hospice Halifax for taking such beautiful and touching care of Judy in her final weeks. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date in Smiths Cove. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice Halifax and Autism Nova Scotia. Judy loved her family, and was profoundly loved in return. It was love for family that she believed trumped all else in life; and in the end, this was the legacy she left behind for all of us.
