Marguerite Weir — ST JOHN'S

WEIR Marguerite Alvina (nee Whitten) WEIR, Marguerite Alvina (nee Whitten) - Our beautiful and loving mother received the Lord’s happy call on Friday, May 17, 2019. Surrounded by the love of her adoring family, Mom passed as she lived, peacefully and quietly, to be reunited with her loving husband, Herbert “Herbie” J. Weir; parents, Cecil and Phoebe Whitten; parents-in-law, Harold and Jessie Weir; sister, Mamie (Jack) Howlett; brothers: Cyril (Phyllis) Whitten; Robert (Joan) Whitten; Max Whitten; and Victor (Barbara) Whitten; sister-in-law, Verna Weir; brothers-in-law: Murray Evans, Lloyd (Florence) Weir and Robert “Bobby” Weir. Left with loving memories of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother are daughters: Phyllis Weir, Karen Donovan, and Sheri Soleim; sons-in-law: Noel Donovan and Craig Soleim; cherished grandchildren: Michael (Amanda) and Justin (Nicole) Donovan & Joshua (Lindsay), Noah and Malia Soleim; precious great-grandchildren: Liam Soleim and Lilly Donovan. Mom is also lovingly remembered and will be deeply missed by her devoted sister, Stella Evans; brothers: Ronald (Gertrude) Whitten and Rt. Reverend Leonard (June) Whitten; brother-in-law, Cyril Weir; sister-in-law, Marie Weir; cousins: Clara Whitten, Rita Irving, Christine Foster and Reverend Francis Whitten; a large and very close family of nieces, nephews and cousins; her St. George’s Church family including “church buddy” Alma Chafe; and many friends including Vera Chafe, Mary Anna White and Mary Horan. Mom was born on Thursday, January 31, 1929 in the house built in 1853 by her great-grandfather, on “the Stand” in Petty Harbour. Mom and Dad married on September 26, 1951 and owned Weir’s General Store for 50 years. In 2001 at age 72, she became the smiling face of Herbie’s Olde Craft Shoppe. Until she moved to Cambridge Estates in August 2017, she enjoyed meeting and sharing her knowledge of Petty Harbour with those she met at “Herbie’s”. As a life-long member of St. George’s Anglican Church in Petty Harbour, she served as a member of the Choir, the Altar Guild, the Vestry and the Anglican Church Women’s Association. Mom’s strong faith was reflected through her quiet kindness and gentleness. Mom was blessed with a long and happy life. We give thanks that she was in good health and celebrated her 90th birthday with a joyous gathering of family members and friends on January 31, 2019. Her warmth and beautiful smile will be sadly missed by all who know and love her. In Mom’s embrace you always felt warm, safe and loved. We express special and heartfelt thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and all of the staff at the Palliative Care Unit – Dr. L. A. Miller Centre. Your kindness and care will never be forgotten. Our family will receive friends at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. on Sunday, May 19, from 5-9pm and on Monday, May 20, from 2-9pm. A service of Holy Eucharist in Celebration of Mom’s life will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 2:00pm, with interment to follow at St. George’s Anglican Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George’s Anglican Church, Petty Harbour.
