Sara Rita Sexton

SEXTON Sara Rita Jan 25th 1923 – Feb. 28th, 2020 We are heartbroken with the passing of our beloved mother Sara Sexton who passed peacefully away at her home on Friday. Our Mom was an inspiration not only to her family but to all who met her. Over her lifetime she lent a hand, provided a shoulder to cry on and gave wise counsel to many; all done with her great faith and wonderful sense of humour. Leaving to celebrate her well lived life but with heavy hearts are her children;Edwina, Gary, Marty (Tish Holland), Marina (Vince McCarthy), Ed (Laura Butland), Herb (Maureen), Mary (Nigel Markham), Sara (Brian Warren). Her Grandchildren; Nik, (Kathy Mentier) Ruby Mae & Jack Thomas; Trevor (Jamie Lee) Alexa & Maddison; Julianna & Mollie; Miles & Ivor (Caroline) Ivy & Isla: Kyra Noseworthy (Adam) Jameson; Laura Lee, Kate (Andrew) & Anna. All her Yetman and Sexton nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Sara and her stories of their families. Mom will be missed by her friends in the Sisters of Mercy and Presentation, her MQP Church community, Littledale Alumni, her fellow volunteers in Grenfell Chapter of Kiwanis and the Tommy Sexton Centre. She freely gave her time to many organizations over the years. In her 90’s Mom was still volunteering. She received the MUN Alumni Tribute Award in recognition of her outstanding community service and was awarded the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador for her work with the Tommy Sexton Centre and the ACNL. Mom touched the lives of everyone she met and has too many special friends to mention by name but they all know Sara loved them and cherished their friendship. She became a second mother to many. A few years back Mom was delighted to meet the granddaughters of Laura and Prime Power. The Powers had been her neighbors in St. Georges 70 years ago. They had been exceptionally kind to her, Dad and baby Edwina. Joan, Cecilia and Ann have become like daughters to her. Mom was predeceased by her husband Edward (Ned) and son Tommy, her parents Anastasia (Molloy) and William Joseph (Bill Joe) Yetman, her nine brothers, Henry, Gus, Matt, Jer, Leo, Syl, Lawrence, Alex, Ned, her sister Mary Krummerich and all her sisters and brothers-in-law. She was the last Yetman of her generation. Our family would like to thank Dr. Kathy Halley for the wonderful care she gave Mom. Her homecare workers, Lorraine, Christine, Debbie, Emily, Anita, Denise and Denika, all of whom took wonderful care of our Mom. A special thank you to Tom Lawlor who faithfully brought Mom communion and prayed with her every week. We will miss our Mom so much but we smile at the thought of her being reunited with her family and friends. Mom will be waked at Caul’s Funeral Home, March 1st, from 2- 4 pm & 7-9pm & March 2nd 2-4 pm & 7-9pm. Funeral Mass at Mary Queen of Peace Parish Church Tuesday March 3rd at 11:00 am. Mom will then return home to St. Mary’s for viewing at the Church of the Assumption with internment to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery next to her Ned and Tommy. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Tommy Sexton Centre, 47 Janeway Place, St. John’s, NL A1A 1A1.
