Recently, Lewis Skip Fischer of St. John’s passed away. Skip taught history at Memorial University for over 40 years, where he specialized in American and maritime history.

Skip was a highly efficient and elegant prof who was very friendly and respectful to all the students that he encountered.

Being a prof incorporates great knowledge of your subject combined with elegant lectures and publications, talents which Skip always exhibited. Skip was very insightful pertinent to American politics and he often formulated brilliant analysis of the historical impact of various U.S presidents and U.S. presidential elections through his lectures, writings and interviews.

Skip also endeavoured to seek special skills within every student that he taught and helped them attain their goals with his benevolent soul. From 2005 to 2007 Skip gave exceptional help to a Memorial grad student who was going through a very difficult time as he stood by the student with insightful advice and character references.

To every student Skip’s life touched, it meant so much to receive his advice, which he gave because he was nice and believed teaching was about reaching all students’ potential. Skip, as a prof you were exceptional academically as well as in your personal empathy towards a student’s well-being.
