I have never been to Newfoundland or Labrador. Yet, after reading how President Donald Trump’s refusal to share needed medical supplies with Canada disappointed your community, I felt compelled to reach out.
Please know Trump does not represent me or the tens of millions of Americans who are forever grateful for the kindness you showed to over 6,600 airline passengers on September 11, 2001. You opened your homes and your hearts to strangers during one of the most difficult moments in our nation’s history. Canada responded with humanity and grace during our time of devastating sorrow.
Two years ago in New York City I saw “Come From Away,” the Broadway musical about Newfoundland’s embrace of those 38 diverted airplanes.
As the show ended the entire audience rose to their feet with a thunderous standing ovation. Seeing everyone in the theater clapping with such joy and emotion I remember thinking, “We’re all cheering for Canada as well.”
As both our countries face a deadly pandemic, the president of the United States continues to embarrass America at home and on the world stage. We hope in November to turn our backs on the bigotry, xenophobia and scandal that define the Trump Administration.
Until then, when you think of America please remember the people who hold your generosity in our hearts rather than the bully-child living in our White House.
