The tablet commemorating soldiers from countries in the British Empire, including Newfoundland, who fought in France and died in the First World War was erected inside the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which was heavily damaged by fire Monday. It’s unknown if the tablet was destroyed.
On one of the pillars on the right hand side of the central nave in Notre Dame in Paris I was always happy to greet a series of escutcheons to soldiers who died on French soil in the First World War.
On that pillar, the escutcheon of Newfoundland was the same size and was placed together with those of Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and Great Britain.
