I am writing to respond to your editorial “Cracking Down on Guns,” (which, for some reason was ran in two consecutive papers).

I never cease to be amazed by all who call for more gun control just about every time there is some type of mass shooting.

All of the same people or groups that do this, never call for any other inanimate object to be banned when such is used in a mass killing.

Things like vehicles, knives and other edged utensils or any other object that can be used to kill or maim, just guns, why?

Because it’s easy to pick on guns and gun owners, who are usually the most law-abiding people around.

It’s a lot harder to try and ban vehicles, knives etc. It is already illegal to kill and injure people so if laws could stop this from happening, we wouldn’t have a problem, would we?

Laws regarding guns or anything else are only good for the law abiding. As for saying that Australia hasn’t had a mass killing since 1996, it’s had at least eight, with from five to 15 killed in each incident and with more injured. Everything from guns to knives, vehicles to arson were used in these attacks.

In France, a country where there is very strict gun control, there have been a number of mass shootings. Why isn’t their gun control working? Gun control doesn’t work anywhere because only the law abiding obey the law.

Now, here in Canada, our present excuse for a government are pondering more new gun laws which will only be a greater burden on law abiding gun owners who are already burdened 10 times more than they should be.

And these new laws, if enacted, will do absolutely nothing to cut down on crime. It’s already illegal to shoot people in Canada isn’t it? As for it being “bizarre” to be armed for self defence, who would rather be hiding unarmed while some lunatic was shooting at them?

In closing, this world has become a very dangerous place, with attacks being made with any number of different things, not just guns. Guns are inanimate objects that can do nothing without a human operator, just like vehicles, knives etc.

So give it a rest. Canada and New Zealand already have all the gun laws they need. If some idiot wants to do harm, they will find a way. They always do.
