Newfoundland and Labrador lost a special person recently.
Mary Ennis, born in Red Island and a very proud Newfoundlander, worked her entire life in the service of others.
She demonstrated her dedication in a number of professions including teaching in remote part of the island and working in Peru as a member of the Sisters of Mercy order. As a lay person and trained Social Worker, she was instrumental in the development of “The Hub” before moving into the Corrections field.
She was well-known and respected in Canada in the corrections field. She worked as a parole officer and the First Female Superintendent in Stephenville and later at the federal Nova Centre for women in N.S. She also served on many boards (too numerous to list) including the National Parole Board of Canada and acted in an advisory capacity for many new initiatives in the Corrections field. she was considered a leader. On retirement, she worked tirelessly assisting many new Canadians to settle in N.L. and was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church for many years. She spent her life advocating and supporting those less fortunate, believing in the inner strength of people.
Mary touched and improved numerous lives both on and off the island.
She will be remembered by many.
