Tories in this province have a very important decision to make in the coming weeks — they have an opportunity to vote for a new leader.

After taking the time to get to know Tony Wakeham and listen to his ideas, I believe Tony is the right person to lead, rebuild the PC Party, earn the support of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, and challenge the Liberal government in the 2019 provincial election.

Although I did not know Tony personally before this leadership race, I have known him through my former work as Information and Privacy Commissioner and in his capacity as CEO of Labrador-Grenfell Health. I always found Tony to be on top of issues, concerned for his employees and the patients within his jurisdiction, and very capable of leading and doing so by example. His ability to build a strong team whether through work, or community involvement has been admirable.

During this leadership race I have experienced first-hand many of Tony’s colleagues, family and long- time friends giving their time to do the work needed for his leadership bid to be successful.

The relationships Tony has established over the years through sports, especially basketball, is evident in the people supporting him. Tony instills confidence and loyalty in those around him. The saying “lead, follow or get out of the way” suits here. There are two types of leaders from my experience; those who lead by pushing down and those who lead by lifting up — I see Tony as an individual who I am proud to support and feel very confident he will set the province on a positive successful path.

Tony’s passion for our province, his love for his family, friends and fellow citizens of Newfoundland Labrador combined with his education, training and leadership experience is why he is the best person to lead our party into the next election and onward. I will be supporting Tony Wakeham. I hope all members of our party will do the same.

Brigadier General (Ret’d)
