LETTER: HMP is an embarrassing warehouse, nothing more

Writing from past experience of incarceration there, Her Majesty’s Penitentiary is nothing more than a warehouse for humans — those accused of, or convicted of breaking the law.

There they sit, twiddling their thumbs. Minds racing, addiction issues lay stagnant. It took me two months of constant requests to actually talk to a psychologist there, once.

Why it’s called a penitentiary is beyond me.

I have served time in Millhaven, Collins Bay, Joyceville … all penitentiaries in Ontario. I’ve served time in Kent (Supermax), Matsque, Mission … all penitentiaries in British Colombia.

Her Majesty’s Penitentiary is not a correctional centre. It is, however, an embarrassment to the Newfoundland government and the citizens therein.

It’s a paycheque for some and misery for others. Nothing more.
