Letter: No locals to fill local jobs?

I was in St. John’s this summer and went shopping in the Sears store at the Avalon Mall. When I went to check out, I was greeted by four male cashiers who were obviously from another country.

I was taken aback because it struck me odd that there was not a Newfoundlander doing this job. I also noticed at Tim’s and some other stores that there were also people from other countries working at these places.

I would like to know if Newfoundlanders do not want to work at these jobs, or is preference being given to newcomers?
