LETTER: Omnibus legislation — a detriment to democracy

What Canadians should be really upset about is omnibus legislation.

An omnibus bill is one in which many different, unrelated diverse laws and changes are lumped together. It prevents Parliament from properly reviewing and debating and voting on each issue separately.

The Liberals learned this trick from the Harper government who were famous for

pushing omnibus bills through Parliament.

In this case on Feb. 27, 2018 the Liberals introduced Bill C74 which was officially tabled as “An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget.”

Buried deep in the back pages were changes to the Criminal Code which allows for remediation agreements with corporations guilty of breaking the law elsewhere in the world.

Without this remediation agreement companies could be denied contracts with the Canadian government.

According to Bill C74 Jody Wilson-Raybould was not asked to do anything illegal.
