On Dec. 14, 2015, Dwight Ball was sworn in as the 13th premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Unlucky 13, maybe. Well, he was unlucky to inherit a lot of big problems left over by the previous Progressive Conservative government: huge debt, poor economy, and what else? Oh yes, Muskrat Falls.
But Ball was resolute and strong initially when faced with political adversity, and as the British say, he liked to keep a stiff upper lip. Or chin, which is how I liked to draw him.
I caricatured all 13 premiers over the years, and each premier has a unique or striking characteristic that I like to exaggerate. (And, of course, a few flies added for good measure.)
The fearless Joey Smallwood with his big glasses, bushy eyebrows, and iconic bow tie. The suave Brian Tobin (with and without his moustache) and his big pucker-up lips. Even Dynamic Danny Williams with his shifty eyes, flat hockey nose and ’80s mullet.
And Dwight was lucky (unlucky?) to have been blessed with a full head of hair and a glorious Mulroney-esque chin.
And, just when I finally nailed his look down, he decides to leave to spend time with his grandkid! Good ol’ Poppy Ball. Unlucky me.
Oh well, on the other hand, I guess that’s the great thing about my business. These days, premiers come and go. Politicians come and go. A steady stream of new and interesting faces to draw. And chins.
