The name of this province has been Newfoundland and Labrador since December 2001.
However, liberal and progressive conservative provincial governments have failed to follow through with other changes which the province’s name change demands.
The university should be Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador (MUNL).
The constabulary should be the Royal Constabulary of Newfoundland and Labrador (RCNL).
The Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corp. should use the acronym NLLC rather than NLC which it now uses.
In fact, the word cannabis should now be included to give us the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor and Cannabis Corp. (NLLCC).
The provincial government should request the Royal Newfoundland Regiment to change its name to include Labrador.
The provincial anthem needs to be changed to the “Ode to Newfoundland and Labrador.”
The anthem should also be changed to be gender neutral and to recognize that the fathers and mothers of migrants to the province may have never been here.
The last stanza of the Ode could be: As loved by others so we love, Where once they stood we stand, Their prayer we raise to heav’n above, When as one we do implore; God guard thee, God guard thee; Newfoundland and Labrador; God guard thee, God guard thee, Newfoundland and Labrador.
