“N.L. government to make road tests mandatory to renew your driver’s licence.” — Imagine this headline! Who knows? Anything can happen.
While out driving, I’ve noticed some drivers have forgotten the rules of the road.
They must have studied hours learning the rules to pass their driver’s exams, but as soon as they got their licence, they tend to gradually ignore the laws. Now just because you’ve been driving for a while, doesn’t mean you still follow the rules of the road.
So, let’s take a short, written test to see how you do. Here are 10 questions to see how much you remember.
• Under normal driving conditions, how many car lengths should you follow a vehicle in a 50km/hr zone?
• Upon the approach of an emergency vehicle with lights flashing/sirens on, you must Pull Over and Stop.
• When you approach a school bus with flashing lights and stop sign out, you should proceed with caution if approaching from the front.
• How many metres can you park from a fire hydrant?
• At a four-way stop, who has the right of way?
• What does a flashing amber light mean?
• What does a diamond-shaped road sign represent?
• What is the shape of the road sign that warns of school children may be present?
• What is the arm signal for slowing down or stopping?
• How far from a stop sign can you park?
Answers are at end of letter! I hope you do well.
I see many drivers who don’t stop at stop signs or signal when turning, but I bet as soon as they see a cop car, all memories of road regulations come flooding back to mind.
I feel that rules of the road should be refreshed every so often. Perhaps, drivers do a written test to renew their licence.
Hey! I got an idea. For those drivers caught with outstanding fines, why not have them do a written and road test every year until their fines are paid off. If they don't comply, then more severe consequences will follow.
Some of your readers may wonder where is this guy coming from? I’m only putting forward my ideas, but at least they’re to consider and debate. Isn’t that what an editorial is all about.
Be careful out there, drivers.
