On behalf of the CNIB Foundation Board I would like to extend our appreciation to Anne Malone and the Social Justice Co-op for educating our municipal leaders on the accessibility challenges being faced by St. John’s residents every winter.
As the board chair of the CNIB Foundation and a doctor of optometry, every day we hear the stories of isolation being experienced every winter by those who are blind or partially sighted. We know the importance of being active in the community both physically and socially and how that can impact your quality of life.
I think most will agree and acknowledge this winter has been one of the most difficult for the city, and we commend Mayor Danny Breen and city staff for the amazing job they did in managing the storm.
We also need to acknowledge that on average, each winter snow filled and slippery sidewalks cause those living with disabilities stress and anxiety as they try to find ways to access healthcare, education, employment and recreational activities for approximately six months of every year.
We ask that the city consider that investing in an enhanced snow clearing system for all who live in our community is really an investment in creating healthier and active communities.
