Since Northern Harvest Sea Farms disaster this past summer of the die off of millions of salmon the company and the aquaculture industry in general has been waging a publicity blitz stressing the importance of aquaculture to people, jobs, families and communities.

I agree that all these things are important.

I think it is also important that we promote, aim for and achieve best practices in the farming of Atlantic salmon.

As consumers we want a product that has been reared with a minimum of chemicals and that has not been produced at a high cost to our environment.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch still lists Atlantic salmon raised in the northwest Atlantic ocean of Canada as a product to “avoid,” citing the overuse of chemicals, potential impacts of escapees on wild stocks and the risk of transmission of disease on wild populations.

When will the industry tell us, the consumer, what steps they are taking to address these problems in the industry and the timeline for their implementation?
