We are writing to you as a means of letting you and the senior/elder members (age 55 plus) of the LGBTQI2S communities and our interested supporters know about our community advocacy, development and organizing initiative. We are three older members of our community who have come together out of concern for our needs as older gays and lesbians and others who wish to age safely, affordably and healthily in our places of choice where our needs are and will be met in ways that are community and person-sensitive.
Firstly, we three are interested in exploring the development of affordable, gay-positive and inclusive housing under the federal government's current ten-year housing strategy where seniors have been identified as a focus population.
We are looking for other members of our community to help with this work.
Also, we have also been talking with the province's Seniors’ Advocate, to good and welcoming response, in order to open discussion on issues that are of concern to aging members of our community and we have recently requested a meeting with MP Nick Whalen re: the federal housing strategy and await his response.
Further, we plan to explore opportunities for seed funding via the province and the city of St. John’s.
We have a Facebook page that is for all the LGBTQI2S community, our supporters and our N.L. seniors/elders especially, where people can go for information, connection and updates.
Please see our FB page under the title of NLGrayGays, where we have started a dialogue and posted a two-question survey for our elders with the N.L. gray gay community.
